Building a Human-Led, Responsible, AI-Literate Global Workforce

February 05, 20262.1 RTA Hall

The United Nations estimates that there are 1.8 billion young people aged 10 to 24, the largest youth cohort in history, nearly 90 percent of whom live in developing countries, and who are digitally connected, innovative, and increasingly engaged in civic and social life. This generation understands that artificial intelligence (AI) will profoundly shape their education, employment opportunities, and participation in society, yet public discourse has largely emphasized technological capability and disruption rather than how AI can be directed toward human flourishing and the public good. Governments therefore face a critical opportunity and responsibility to define and implement a human-centered vision for AI, anchored in education and workforce systems prepared to meet the AI era at scale. Holistic AI education must develop durable human skills alongside AI competencies, beginning with age-appropriate AI literacy across primary and secondary education and extending through AI-enabled training and reskilling pathways for entry-level and transitioning workers. Drawing on decades of leadership in artificial intelligence, computational thinking, and constructionist pedagogy, MIT has developed actionable, scalable, and ready-to-deploy resources, including Day of AI and PATH (Pathways in AI for Training and Hiring), which this session will highlight as tools and materials governments can leverage to equip students, educators, and workers with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to engage with AI responsibly, ethically, and productively. The result is a stronger public sector, a more competitive private sector, and an AI-literate society capable of making informed decisions about the design, deployment, and governance of AI technologies, ensuring that the benefits of the AI-enabled economy are broadly shared.
