The report “Urban Science: Unlocking Sentient Cities” explores the transition from infrastructure-focused urban development toward a new generation of “sentient cities” that place human experience at the center of planning and governance. While smart cities improved efficiency through digital technologies and automation, the report argues that future cities must go further by integrating data analytics, AI, behavioral insights, and environmental intelligence to create adaptive, inclusive, and people-centered urban environments. Through the lens of urban science, cities are reimagined as interconnected ecosystems capable of sensing, learning, and evolving in response to residents’ needs. The report presents five strategic themes to guide this transformation, covering predictive planning, human-responsive design, sustainability, institutional collaboration, and innovation ecosystems. It also highlights international case studies—including London, Singapore, and Melbourne—to demonstrate how urban science can improve mobility, resilience, livability, and evidence-based governance. Ultimately, the report argues that the success of future cities will depend not on the amount of technology deployed, but on how intelligently and ethically it is used to improve human wellbeing and urban resilience.
